Education is the single most important factor for the development of a country

Education affects the mind, character or physical ability of a person and education is a process of transmitting knowledge, skills and values in the societies (University of Mumbai, 2014). At the same time, Yero (2002) stated that the purpose of education since ancient times is to develop the intellect, to serve social needs, to contribute to the economy, to create an effective work force, to prepare students for a job or career, to promote a particular social or political system. The purpose of education does not explicitly point out to transmit knowledge. However, it identifies three main key factors; knowledge, skills and values. Therefore, education stands for enriching knowledge, developing skills and cultivating values.
“Education has innate benefits; it provides a person with the skills to think more effectively than those without it” (Smith, 2013) and “Opening classroom doors to all children, especially girls, will help break the international chains of poverty because education is intrinsically linked to all development goals, such as supporting gender empowerment, improving child health and maternal health, reducing hunger, fighting the spread of HIV and diseases of poverty, spurring economic growth, and building peace” (Results Educational Fund, 2008). Therefore, education plays the key role of lives. It moulds and nurtures people. Today, the education system of each country is developed depending on its own purposes. Today, modern school systems prepare children for citizenship, for work, universal literacy, coping with everyday life and develops children intellectually, academically and all other areas as well (Schofield, 1999). For an example, in Maldives fisheries science subject was introduced as educationists believed that this subject would help to develop fishing industry, which is the second biggest industry in the Maldives. At the same time, travel and tourism was introduced to improve tourism industry, which is the biggest industry in the Maldives. Education made our children to be aware of the biggest sources of income. It made our children to be interested in these fields. At the same time, it gave the opportunity for our young stars take part in the economy of the nation with their fullest potential making a progressive development of the industry. Therefore, education plays the most important role in the economy of a nation. Growth of the economy directly and indirectly contributes to the development of a country (European Central Bank, 2007).
Like economy, education plays an immense role in developing all other sectors such as health, social factors, innovations so on. As mentioned above education does not only transmit knowledge. It also cultivates values; values related to self, values related to family and values related to the community. The purpose of education is to nurture people in a desired way. It is important for a nation to have people who are disciplined as it contributes to the social development and the development of other sectors of a nation as well.  Discipline is the most fundamental aspect of a nation. Without discipline, no nation can exist and it is the basic  insignia of social life (Kulwant, 1996). Education plays an important role in disciplining children. Through different phases of learning children learn to behave well and understand what is right and wrong. Today, in each nation, curriculum is developed by giving importance to nurture their children to be successful, motivated, responsible as well as confident individuals. For an example, the purpose of Scottish curriculum is stated as “to enable each child or young person to be a successful learner, a confident individual, a responsible citizen and an effective contributor” (Education Scotland, 2014). According to Education Scotland, the attributes of a confident individual are self-respect, a sense of physical, mental and emotional well- being, secure values and beliefs ambition, the capabilities  of a confident individual are relate to others and manage themselves, pursue a healthy and active lifestyle, be self aware, develop and communicate their own beliefs and view of the world, live as independently as they can, assess risk and make informed decisions, achieve success in different areas of activity. Like Scotland, curriculum of other countries is also developed to cater the needs of the nation, including values, skills and knowledge as it is an important aspect to develop a country.
New technology and innovation has become one of the most important part of our lives (Use of Technology, 2014) .   It is the part of our everyday life and day by day it is growing at speed.  It is highly useful in industries, health sector, education and other areas as well. It saves time and makes the work easier and feasible. Therefore, technology and innovation in a country can be improved by training its people to be creative, informative and  innovative which can be done through education.
With the help of health professionals only, health sector can be improved. These professional fields can be improved by giving necessary information and trainings. “Young people who have completed primary education are less than half as likely to contract HIV as those with little or no schooling” (Centre for Global Development, 2002). It is because education makes the people open their eyes and mind for the challenges they face and education makes the people more aware about the world. According to the Centre for Global Development, in many poor countries, with each additional year of schooling, people earn 10% higher wages. These earnings, in turn, contribute to national economic growth. Qualified health professionals in the field are necessary for a better health condition.
Hence, education is the single most important factor for the developmental as it takes the responsibility of building innovative, creative, globally competent and disciplined generation.
